I have been giving some thought to the 2012 plan and so far I am not certain what direction to take for the immediate future. I am looking to develop in some new areas this year and in that I am certain. Let's see how the plan unfolds.

In Commissions, I am currently in the works on a portrait of Alley, a dearly loved Arab mare who recently passed. Caron Kuryluck owner.

I am also working on a 36x48 oil. This is a work sample and I will be painting it here in New Minas at the home of Derek Salsman. I will probably be doing a commission of his son as well as I have already completed one of his daughter.

A new kitty may be joining in as well, which means I may be having two cats in the apartment. I must be going completely mad.

Hickstead passes... the World mourns.

November 6th, 2011 was a sad day for Canada and the entire world for that matter who loved the sport of show jumping.. Hickstead, possibly one of the greatest show jumpers of all time has passed. It is often hard to hard to measure the true greatness of some on a day to day basis, but when they leave us, we think back and realize how rare and special they truly were..

RIP Hickstead.
You made our hearts soar.

After 35, every year is a milestone!!!

I would certianly like to make it to 40 but with the continuous changes in economy and the industry, I will do my best.

Sincerest thanks to everyone who has helped me get this far. It has been quite a journey.

I haven't followed the rules very well but I have always done my best to deliver the best work I can.

The journey began when I went to Toronto in 1973. I made it into my second year at the Ontario College of Art and Design. I moved from there to a closer relationship with the horse industry. Highlights included working as a groom for the captain of the Canadian Equestrian Team, James Elder.

From there, I went into an apprenticeship with Horvath Studio (Eaton Center). Tibor Horvath was a highly successful portrait and Jewish Wedding photographer in Toronto. My apprenticeship lasted the better part of a year...sponsored through Manpower as a trade development program. From here, an opportunity came up to work with renowned California Equestrian photographer June Fallaw. A year and a half photographing horse shows in California followed. Beyond this a pursuit into the glitz and glamour of the world of fashion advertising. A tough nut to crack initially. During a brief visit to New York, one of New Yorks finest agencies the Fords invited me to be in the audience of America Alive. An opportunity to see Francesco Scavulo at work with current model of the month, a Scandinavian beauty who was on the cover of American Harpers Bazaar. Art Linkletter, Eileen Ford and Jack Scala were all guesting. The program began with a high tech presentation of Scavullo shooting a tight glamour head shot of the Scandinavian beauty, with a large screen above which showed each image as it was taken, a real eye opener for me. Moments like these occur rarely but it was all part of the fuel that fed the fire and sent me on a 10 year chase to become a successful editorial photographer in Europe.

The years and many changes later, I dedicate my time mostly to the equestrian sport industy today. The journey to this point has been challenging, difficult and at times highly rewarding. I have been able to see the world and all through the eyes of a photographer. For all who have in any small part helped make that happen over the years, I sincerely thank you. I have enjoyed every moment of it.

A sad turn of events left me without a mother on September 21st. I am deeply saddened. She was a rock for me and helped me through many hard times. As the youngest of three sons, I suppose the natural instict of the mother is to protect her youngest, and I felt that bond and will miss it terribly.

Rest in peace Mom. I love you more than I can express.

Spruce Meadows Masters 2011

A lot of good and bad happened this year and I chose to put a positive spin on the season by attending the Spruce Meadows Masters in Calgary, Alberta. It was a spectacular weekend of warm weather and great riding. No regrets.

A Great Celebration to attend even if it were in Rush Seating and photograph one of the premier equestiran events in the world .... held right here in Canada. My sincerest thanks for the honor of being present. I am told the Spruce Meadows Masters Tournament ranks second only to Aachen as one of the finest equestrian facilites in the world. I now have proof and couldn't agree more.It was as interesting to hear the proceedings from behind the gates as it was inside. As in all well organized affairs, the show must go on, and after Hickstead threw a shoe on his final line, there was a bit of hustling to have his foot taped so he could reappear for his final bow. Luckily a victory gallop was not needed as the winner got to ride in his own Mercedes Benz for the victory lap. My photos barely do justice to the event. Thank you all for allowing me the priviledge.

As the 2011 season draws to a close, it was a highlight for me to attend the Spruce Meadows Masters.

It has come to light on recent jobs of the increasing popularity of the "working head shot" so on my most recent assignment, I decided I had the time and the place to investigate it further. The show is the British Columbia Dressage Championships ( a title I must say has an impressive ring to it, but for the level and expectation of the title, I would have thought an FEI approved judge would be in order, and I was there on hire by Totem Photographic.. as the guy that was flown in from Halifax (truth is I was flown in from Oakland, a much closer location). I pretty much put my foot down and said " I will photograph here for the duration" and stuck to my guns. Often one does not have ideal conditions for light or backdrops but this ring offered some very good options and I wanted to see what they were. Brutal sunlight can be pretty on horses but it certainly does no favors to mature riders.

At any rate, there were some lovely entries and I will share with you a few of those results so you can see for yourself how the investigation played out. Enjoy!

On the road and growing more weary by the moment. Life isn't easy being a nomad hired horse show shooter. There are times, I would give away the camera for the asking (an act of generosity I try to bring to the job, which perhaps is more of a personal curse than a blessing) and go home and have some personal privacy and have some sort of a life....luxuries that life on the road rarely offer. The money is attractive when you are my age and offers are getting lighter and lighter, but in many cases white slavery is the trade off. Lunch breaks, rest periods, all are foreign concepts to the employer of the horse show photographer. In fact at the most recent show, we had a fifteen minute break in the morning and an hour off at noon for all three days of the event and the general commentary was "I won't be able to pay your full rates for such a light show". It just doesn't make the money.

Well how very generous of you to not be able to do it yourself then?????????? Hello! Sorry. Speaking a foreign language I guess.

I often wish I could turn back the clock and have the days when photographers were photographers and not a mobile factory on wheels being directed by those who often don't know one end of the horse from the other.. Everyone has a different business plan. Some are pricey. Some are simply flooding the market. What does the future hold? I think we may be in trouble, but I probably won't be around to see it. The clock is ticking on my end for sure.

"Yes but you don't have the worry of the business." I have heard that line a few times as well. It seems ironic that after more than 37 years as a photographer, my fate is to answer to all the opinions of those who neither have the experience to be in the position they are in, nor who the eyes or insight to be holding the positions they hold....but they have the means and ability to impress with their electronic toys and know how/ Add to that a bourgeois attitude and a twinkle in your eye and presto you are "in command".,

Oh well, I obviously am aching in more parts than I can express and it all seems to matter little on the grand scheme of things. Such is my life today.

My first time in British Columbia. I am here as part of the team of Totem Photographic covering the Thunderbird Summer Festival Experience. and enjoying the beautiful Langley area. Today it is raining and it is the first day of rain I have seen in two weeks here, so no complaints about the weather. There were over 900 horses competing during the first week and the numbers have dropped to about 650 for the second week of the festival and quality horsemanship is abundant on every level. Thanks for having me come Steve and Sue. It has been truly a lot of fun despite the odd hair pulling moment which seems to go hand in hand with taking too many photos and being on your feet too many hours and eating on the run and often to bed with a less than stellar dinner... there! Covered all the basic complaints. If I can think of any more.... I will mention them... in person!!!!

Week two in progress. I have been assigned to the Thunderbird ring and today Hunter One. Closing classes both yesterday and today were the Hunter Derbies. Both were won by the same horse. An outstanding performance and I will add the name of both horse and rider at another moment. Beautiful bright sunny days nearly every day to shoot with so there have been no excuses for good coverage. We have been covering all six rings just about every day.

West coast photographer Steve Charles of Totem Photographic had me out to help cover the ISR Oldenburg inspection at Dreamscape Farm, Campbell Valley Provincial Championships (3 Day) and two weeks of Thunderbird. We are about to start Thunderbird and it will be a big show to cover. Beautiful facility. Very good hospitality and so far the BC experience has been very enjoyable. Taking a Closer Look at the State of Current Affairs

This has been a rough day. A few years back, I was working or shall we say collaborating with a few photographers shooting large circuit, and smaller shows from coast to coast. It seemed like a great idea at the time, and financially it was definitely beneficial....then! Those were the early digital years.

However, as I look over the bigger picture, I see I have lost perhaps more of myself than I care to as a result of the exposure.

I am very aware it isn't easy to start up a competitive operation these days to shoot the major circuit shows and it would require more energy and finance than I would be willing to shell out personally at this stage of the game, particularly knowing and having experienced what I have to date.

I thought the better solution would be to collaborate on a per job payment basis. It certainly started well enough and my rates increased varying from $X to $Z per day, which while not excessive do add up when working 5 day per week shows over a consistent time period. Lots of travel and got to see plenty of nice horses. Not such a bad job or so it would seem. The only foreseeable problem would perhaps be that each employer or "business" basically make up their own rules as they go along. On road travel is not all for the light of heart. Be prepared to live in shady accommodations, work endless hours, have little to no personal life, and be prepared for the fact that you will have to endure the personal quirks of all involved in the process.

Regarding the business, one thing I probably hadn't thought clearly enough through was the complete and total sacrifice of copyright and what ultimately that means to you as an "individual". That is or so it would seem the kicker of it all. You get paid X amount of dollars and are expected to use your own equipment (costly pro gear) at the risk of it being damaged or destroyed or stolen (add your replacement costs) and for this day rate or"fee" the company owner walks with your copyright. At the time it is easy to overlook but if you think about it, once those dollars are spent, what do you have left? Some worn out gear and a need for more work. Meanwhile, the employer company keeps building their copyright files which they can earn money from for years to come, and have the rights to do with as they will. It would definitely be smarter to keep a clear eye on the long term picture, because the short term only appears to be self satisfying. I compare the "new business" plan with years I spent working in photography and while all companies paid the daily rates and fees, they never once expected full copyright of all work produced. That was never how it operated. You made your choice of work delivered and you sent a bill for it, exactly as your employer still does. Note the change on the higher level is far less than the change on the supporting team.

Now if you are starting out or just want to shoot part-time, I see no problem with this system and it is well designed for them. However, if you have had a career over a span of 36 years, and suddenly it is like pulling teeth to ask for a few samples from the bulk of work you have produced, to document a simple work record, the taste for it all gets sour quite quickly.

This same situation irritated me considerably a few years back...to the point that I dropped working with the company and at the time I wanted it to be permanent. However, as you all know the economy took a fall and we all have had our share of hardships during it. I ate some humble pie and came back to work for them. They of course offered me a reduced rate of pay and being that I was in a dire straits financially, I was forced to take it. This same company being the one I had walked from a few years back for the dramas over holding a few photo samples of the time during which I worked. I will not mention names.. much the same as when they are on Facebook, they don't post their picture. We all know who we are but let's not get into "name calling".

Call me old school, but I believe a photographer's work is his integrity and if the total right to it is removed, well, so is self respect.. and this I would never ask of anyone as it is a direct statement with regard to self worth and a not particularly flattering one in that.

So next question is how does one go on knowing this? To sell out is to clearly agree you are a nobody and meaningless.

The options left are pretty straight forward...do what you can on your own and kiss the rest of it good bye. At least then you will not be shooting thousands of images and wearing out gear which costs plenty to replace, and keep your own copyright on your own images.

Lessons in life are often hard learned but I still oddly believe that people exist who hold some respect for those who have more often than none put them where they currently stand. Apparently they are a dying breed. Greed rules the world and with it the so called successful players... at great expense to others I might add, but more sadly, I think they are the ones who are losing more in the end.

A lot of preaching has been going on regarding the large player companies and how copyright and images gets stolen by the exhibitors but I have heard little being told about the staff who work tirelessly for these companies and literally give them an unprecedented amount of copyright to sell. They are very selective of who works for them but they don't for a second offer that person more than a fraction of the profits made. By handing off full copyright you are enabling any company to earn a living off the images for years to come, so if they quibble about not making a lot at a show, think of the great picture and know what is truly being said.

It would appear the "predator" companies are not all so innocent and respect worthy after all. As you sit there writing your cheque or handing over your credit card to that smiling charming person in front of you, know that beneath that exterior, there lurks another face, one that you might not care to know.

I will be 59 in August. There isn't an awful lot left yet I feel I need to prove. I have had a pretty good run of it.

Currently....I find it a lot of fun to share publicly some of the experiences I have had. In reading, you may learn to not make some of the mistakes I have made. There will always be newer and greater talent yet to come. I salute you and your growing pains.

The days of photographers working alone seem to be a thing of the past, but it is when I work best and when I do my best work. For this I am grateful. I have never quite understood how someone can sleep at night looking at their name written on a photo they never took. In fact, ironically, I had those same words delivered to me today in reverse order, saying, you take a photo you shot for me and sign your name to it... as if this were a crime.... my answer is simply... who did take the photo???? Did you?

I believe this to be a crossroads situation and there will be a need of time to help deliver the pathway to choose. No important decision should ever be made on short notice, or while there are emotions involved. Insight comes through knowledge. There are greater issues relating to respect or perhaps better said "lack of", both from self and from employer.

I actually went through an interview once in which this very situation came to light and interestingly enough, a choice made in my interest resulted in a loss of an opportunity. There is always a price to pay, but in life you have to be true to someone, why not make that yourself?

A quiet spirit is a good goal to achieve.

Been a while since my last post...but here is some current news. I have been in California for a month, helping Deb Dawson cover some NorCal Shows. Sonoma Horse Park the first two weeks, followed by a side trip to Othello, Washington to photograph a farm shoot for Crane Lake Farm, then back south to Sacramento for a one week A rated Hunter Jumper show at Leone Equestrian... and that brings us to currently this week which is a four day B rated show at Brookside.... a theme show called "Beach Party". This will be followed by one more week at Sonoma Horse Park and then return to NS for a few weeks.

It has been fun, somewhat stressful as I am feeling my age a bit and the longest days which have been up to 13 hours do take their toll. All in all, no complaints. On line access is inconsistent when on the road as facilities and accommodations tend to vary. Deb and I worked the Leone show alone. I shot it all. She did the office. This week, Marsha Cooey will be in office and both Deb and I will be shooting. I feel like I am shooting well, consistently and haven't lost my edge yet. Only the bones and joints don't seem quite as cooperative as they once were.

All in all a good time in NorCal. The farm visit to Othello, Washington was great. Super nice folks. The two Juans (father and son) were a huge help in getting horses cleaned and presented for photos. The shoot was mixed breed... Tennessee Walkers, Missouri Foxtrotters, and Gypsy Drums. The Washington area is amazing farm land. Where we were was on the edge of the Frenchman Hills. Their farm, 300 acres with scenic views of the expansive plains behind, my first up close contact with sage brush. Had a great time there. Went trail riding. Shot lots of photos and the hospitality and accommodation were great. Huge thanks to Kathy St Martin who originally linked me with Jean Baldrige.

Facebook seems to be as good a place to keep connected with friends and acquaintances around the world and along with it comes other opportunities.

Do you enjoy taking photos? If so, you may find the photo contests fun as well. Come and check us out at Equine, Feline, Canine, and Bovine Paparazzi Comps. It is really just for fun but there are some very good photographers who join in and we all seem to have a good time.

Currently I have just reached my 50th win in the various Photo Competitions which is an impressive landmark considering all wins are determined by member votes. Thanks to all who helped make it possible. There is a lot of work to maintaining the contests, and as the season gets busy, I may have to find a support team to keep the contests operating. I have it well organized so it is not too bad really. One person can do the four but when other commitments come into play, regularity may be challenged a bit.

2011 Taking a Look at the Year.

West Coast Canadian photographer Steve Charles has approached me with a possible west coast show deal, working on his team. I suggested a full season on the west coast as this past season on the east coast was a near ruin financially for me. He is looking into possibilites at the moment. We will see how this plays out. Nothing confirmed to date. Steve has been in touch with me over the past few years so this is not a new plan, it is just one that is now coming into play.

Shawn MacMillen who I have worked with at many US shows had a relapse with Cancer and has undergone recent Chemo. They are faced with innumerable financial scars due to US Medical Bills. They are offering me in a colaborateion with commission work in the hopes this may help ease a bit of their financial burder and do some small part to keep their operation afloat.. I also see it as a fantastic opportunity to further expand my art endeavor and help keep me employed through the off season, particularly winter in Canada.

On my photoreflect proof site, Centaur Photo, many of the past photos have been removed and will be kept in archive. If interested in purchasing, all images will be made available on disc or through copy ordering.

In the future, proofs will be posted for a 30 day cycle and then retired to archives. Illegal removal of images from the site is highly discouraged as it is a punishable offense. I really don't wish to go down that road but if priviledges are abused, then action may have to be taken.

The intention of doing hard work and producing good strong images is a lot of effort and if this is not respected, through support and orders, unfortunately the priviledge will not be made available on line. Let's hope it does not reach that point.

One of the true advantages in working on large format shows and on the teams of well set up photography businesses is to observe operations and see all the individual ways business is being managed. At 58 years of age, I don't have great desires to launch an effort of this size on my own but I certainly appreciate the opportunities to see and photograph some of the best professionals in the world today. There are some amazing animals giving everything they have in the highest levels of sport. I salute the trainers, the incredible young horses and all the support and kindness I have been given through the years. Do not think I take this opportunity lightly.

Thanks to everyone who have helped make my 35 years as a photographer possible. It has been my ticket to travel the world and meet an amazing group of people.

First commission of the year was ordered by Lindsay Steele of her dressage gelding Lonesome.

If interested in a commission, this is a great time of year to do so as production tends to grind to a halt around this time of year and new projects are always welcomed. There is a 20% discount on commission pricing being offered to the first five commissions ordered for 2011. Tentative at present but it is possible I will be working west coast shows with Steve Charles this season... not yet fully confirmed, but Steve is currently planning his season and I have been contacted with this in mind. I will probably head west for most of the season which should be interesting as I have yet to know western Canada. With all the travelling I have done over the years, it is definitely time to get more familiar with my home country. Looking forward to this opportunity. However, as things go, it is best to not make plans until all is confirmed. so for the moment this is "tentative" but "promising".

That is currently the upcoming news for 2011. I will keep you informed as the year evolves.

Lots of fun for all. Rockabilly Glam was the style of the day and Kim Goode not only looked the part but displayed exceptional talent in her percussion style chops on the Upright Base as the youngest member of the family trio, the highly entertaining Shakedown Combo.

Their rendition of "Caravan" was well worth the wait and it gave me "goosebumps" as they wrapped up the list of entertainers for the day.

Chad and Mandy Hiltz hosted. Their Hollywood Style business has become a curiosity on Hwy 358 and for many, this was an outstanding day of fun, well attended and definitely a "must see" for the coming year. Well done Chad and Mandy. A very nice atmosphere, great weather and very good attendance. I am definitely adding this to my calendar for 2011.

The time has come to get realistic and unfortunately as I look at efforts, costs (maintenance and replacement), and time, I do not see a satisfactory return. The convenience of the computer has obviously spoiled the client-photographer relationship as it is more convenient to just look on line when you feel the urge than to actually buy photos. This saddens me because one would think that after 35 years as a photographer, one's ability should merit some value, but apparantly not.

I will be rethinking the overall plan and pricing. This is a profession. If you put yourself in my shoes, would you work for nothing? I do understand the value of promotion as do you.

I don't wish to be unkind but I do have myself to look out for. Noone else will pay my bills. So with that in mind, understand coming changes.

Industry Changes- Pros and Cons

With the economic changes we are all faced with, the equine event industry seems to be undergoing some problems. To be enticed to photograph an event with misinformation that there are no photographers coming and then end up with one hundred entries and three photographers, I am confused. Please explain how anyone is benefiting. Come on people. You are losing us here. Be honest. When you arrive they make it clear noone is under contract and all is fair game.

Sorry, not interested. I had a flash go during the early phase of the event. Did I feel a sudden urge to purchase another as backup to cover the event? No! Would I in the future for this group? No!

The need for a full time dependable profession has increased dramatically. Noone can make money if all are competing in a tiny market. Costs of equipment and operation require some benefit. There is little to be gained at the moment.

Of course by voicing an opinion one is also singling onself out for further criticism. My reply is this... Find a photographer you like! Work with him! As it currently stands, noone will win here.
The world seems to be filled with "new photographers". Thirty five years of experience seems to have little value.

More cons than pros here I am seeing.

I am sure you are all aware of the effort and time that goes into photographing events and posting and organizing so I may offer on line viewing of events covered. Please respect this priviledge as it may be removed. I hope to gain some income from my efforts so for those who are in the habit of helping yourselves to online images for your personal pleasure, please don't. My prices are more than affordable and I would like to discourage photo pirating of any nature.

I post on the proof site without "watermark" or "proof" written on the images so you can view your proofs better. This does not mean they are free pictures. If you wish to use them for your personal use or for promotion, ask and buy the discs. You will then have copyright permission to use as you wish.

If you are pointed out as having done this or continue to do so, you will no longer be part of the Facebook family, and I will investigate the limits of the law in this matter.

I hope that doesn't sound overly nasty. I am not trying to be the bad guy here. I just want basic respect and appreciation like everyone else. If we all work together on this, we can all have better service and delivery of pictures.

On Friday, Jan. 15th at 7 pm, an opening for the group show at the Acadia University Art Gallery. I submitted three pieces and hopefully all will hang. Nice gallery and have always wanted to exhibit there. It is a very nice space. The show runs through Mar.5th, 2010.

Of the three pieces entered, two were hung. Space was an issue and the gallery was completely filled and it all looked great, like a patchwork quilt. Over 50 different artists in this group.

On Jan 30th, two of Reg's originals joined a group show at the Apple Bin Art Gallery in the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation. The show has begun.

2010 Begins!!!!!!!!

The year has begun. January 6th was my first challenge. A one hour presentation to a local photo club called the Kings County Photo Club (a diverse group of shutter bugs).

I would not have wanted to take on a full blown professional group for my first attempt at a presentation as among other things, I had to use a program which I was completely unfamiliar with and develop a structure with some continuity for a presentation and all had to be completed in three days.. and no plan upon entry... a single idea... and build from there. The talk was titled.... What makes photos talk?

This was a fair challenge for me and I worried considerably during the preparation as I didn't want to come across too badly. Apparantly it went ok. The group was very pleased and many thanked me and came up to shake my hand. I hoped I left the group with some new ideas and goals. Nothing is written in stone regarding style and taste but it is good to compare our ideas with others and help each other as we can along the way. My career has spanned more than 30 years and I certainly have many to thank for helping make that possible.

I know when I began in photography, what was most important to me was having an opportunity to look at good work and develop my ideas of how I might like to imitate what I liked most and in the process, develop ideas on the direction I wanted to go in and learn as I grew. With that in mind, I tried to be consistent and show a body of work that reflected a standard with enough diversity that many could find at least something they liked.

Speacial thanks to Jeff Newberry for inviting me to make this presentation, who is a teacher and probably the most experienced himself in the group about making presentations, and when he said it was well done, I felt a sigh of relief.

It was a good experience and I was glad to be there. The group meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Experimental Station in Kentville at 7 pm. Anyone interested in attending is welcomed. Memberships are available. Good luck to the group for 2010, and thank you for this experience.

Wrapping it up for 2009, it was a year with plenty of ups and downs.

The year ended on a high note with the booking of the 70 day StallionTesting at Silver Creek Farm, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. My sincerest thanks to Kathy St Martin for the recommendation that got me there... and more... Thanks a lot Kathy.

I had the pleasure of staying in the main house for the first few nights which of course spoiled me rotten. I had a tough time leaving. The claw marks are still on the door, floor and anything I could grasp as Kathy drug me mercilessly out by the heels. We spent a few quiet days at Jos and Kathy's farm or at least until Kathy discovered a major missing file on a replaced computer that had her in tears. I cooked dinner that night. She mourned.

I was able to cover the first weekend of the final which was the showjumping test. Then a couple of visits to document insight to the training process and closed with the three day finale on Dec 10-12th. Included are a few images of the various stallions.

A very nice group of young horses in all. Best of luck and congratulations to all of the stallion owners. It was a team effort and I was impressed by the overall care and condition of the latest group of stallion newcomers to the world stage. It was also enjoyable to be around the staff and director as there was plenty of hard work being done but an air of humor prevailed and it was appreciated as wind chill factors were at the max on a few ocassions. Wind apparantly is something Oklahoma knows a bit about.

Thanks to eveyone who had any part in any of this.....from the invitation to Oklahoma.... the hospitality... my wonderful "blue room". It was a true taste of southern hospitality at its finest.

The return home during the preliminary stages of Christmas Rush... we will not talk about...but eventually I arrived and only a few days later..my luggage followed.

All is well that ends well. I consider a priviledge to have lasted 35 years behind the camera doing what I have never considered work. There are too many people to thank for helping make this happen but you all know who you are and you will have a place in my heart forever.

Above photo features the 30 day stallion test reserve champion 2005, Masterpiece, owned, trained and shown by Ken Borden. The 2009 70 day stallion testing is currently underway in Oklahoma at Silver Creek Farm. I am going to spend the final two weeks of the testing documenting the training phases and finale. At the 2005 testing I was just able to be there for the final two days, so having a two week time frame to document is should offer ample opportunity to capture these fine young animals showing their talents. If all goes as planned, I will be in Oklahoma from Nov 28- Dec 14th.

This year I have decided to get my act off the couch and take it to the Acadia Christmas Craft Expo which is held annually in Wolfville, Nova Scotia at the Acadia University Arena.

Dates and times are Nov 20. opening at 10 am and closing at 9 pm. Nov 21. opening at 10 am and closing at 6 pm. Nov 22. opening at 10 am and closing at 5 pm.

This has grown into a popular event and will offer a wide selection of crafts of all types. I will do my share to promote the horse and will be offering limited edition prints, samples of work (equestrian sport, and also images of the area), booking events for 2010, originals may be purchased, also a few practical horsey items. Try to stop by and enjoy the events. With the huge selection, I am sure you will find something to satisfy all your shopping needs.

It is promising to be a full weekend as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will arrive Friday, Nov 20th to the front lawn of University Hall on the Acadia Campus. Wolfvile is one of a select few communities where the Olympic Torch will stop for a community wide Olympic Celebration leading up to Vancouver 2010. It is anticipated that several thousand people will attend the Olympic Torch Relay ceremony and the organizing committee of the Darwin Event Group is ensuring the Craft Expo will benefit fully from the Olympic festivities. Let's see how it goes.

I am preparing for the grand event. If this should be productive, I will add at least one more craft show in the coming year to help promote the equestrian sport through art and photography. Wish us well and if available, please stop by.

After weeks on the road and too much fast food, it is certainly a pleasure to have some good friends who feel the need to wine and dine you. My first great meal out here in Ocala was with Maya the young horse dressage trainer at Pennock Point and Judy Yancey, Sporthorse breeder extraordinaire. It was on Labor Day weekend and we went to a restaurant that is somewhat new here in Ocala called Mimi's. We had fun. I ate delicious food until I was blue in the face and then waddled off. Can't recall all of the specifics but I started with a glass of New Zealand wine which had an unusal mixture of flavors and was delightful. It just got better and better. The seafood entry was beyond mouthwatering. I even had desert. All in all an amazingly delicious outing.

Next up... Sandy Lieb invited Maya, Sally, Masu Hamacher, and Kim Clark to a dining experience at the Brazilian restaurant called Ipanema. Wow, first off, decor alone it is a stand out. Apetizers, drinks, the best salad bar I have ever tried....amazing selection, hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, huge shrimp, a great selection of cheeses, and an endless variety more that was beyond delicious. After the salad bar, the coasters we had for drinks we flip over which gives the servers the OK to start bringing out the meat. They bring out fresh off the fire, filet mignon, garlic cirloin, bacon wrapped sirloin, lamb, etc etc. on giant skewers and as they arrive, they slice off what you want and with your own tongs you pick it off as it is cut and you sample and taste....goes on and on until you realize you are beyond stuffed and it was a delight. As a yummy finale, on the skewer they serve pineapple seared with a cinnamon flavor on the skin and OH MY GOD... amazing. They also have a mixed berry dessert with cream cheese ice cream that is a killer. Wow... is all I can say. Amazing and thank you Sandy. It was an unforgettable meal. The real problem at this restaurant is the quality is so good, you just can't stop eating. The flavors are unworldly.

The following night... an invite with the judges and officials from the Great American Sunshine Classic, the show which is starting today. We went Thai this time and my entree was amazing. Can't even recall how it was written, but it was basically a curried beef with zucchini and peppers over rice in an amazing cocunut milk based cream sauce. Sandy Werner, Candace Rich, Sandy's daughter Sue who is a Tampa Lawyer, and a friend of hers, and the judge, "Bill" from Minnesota. Well Lord, hallelujah, I am in heaven. I probably won't need to eat the rest of the weekend. I feel "refurbished".

Needless to say... the way to the heart still seems to be through the stomach, and in that regard, my heart is currently singing!!!!!

Thank you all for a most pleasant dining experience in Ocala.

My mouth will be watering as I think about it for some time.

Directly following the Great American Sporthorse breed championships to be held Sept 19th and 20th this Sunday, I head to Tampa for Monday and Tuesday and then I am off to Nova Scotia midday Tuesday (the 22nd). I am looking forward to arriving and getting on track for winter. Plenty of catching up to do after 8 weeks on the road.

I have been asked by Evelyn Mainwaring if I could co-judge again this year on the Canadian Warmblood maritime tour since last year had a positive result, which I find challenging and fun as it enables me to add my input from a visual standpoint based on comparisons to many competition horses I have had the pleasure of photographing. That will be upcoming on Oct 11th and probably will be a two day venture. Evelyn is a well known horsewoman of considerable reputation who was I believe the person who helped import "Big Ben" who in partnership with Captain Canada himself, Ian Millar, was perhaps one of Canada's greatest show jumpers of all time.

Amy from Horse-Sport Canada has sent a note advising procuedure in obtaining a Press Pass to enable coverage of International Equestrian events and her response was helpful. Basically it involves contacting show offices and placing requests in advance. This may enable access in the future for events that I may wish to attend. I think I learned that lesson at theYoung Riders Championships this year, which was at my finger tips but not quite accessible.

Hot off the press... a request for submission of resume and references for an upcoming colaboration with the Media Merchants for a projection ad campaign in Halifax. I did a one day gig for them just before coming south and it is nice to know I am being considered. Timing could not be better. Fall and winter work is not that easy to land in my particular field.

Anyway, that's an update.... wish me luck.

The trip to the US has indeed had some highs and lows. All in all, I probably should not complain. I have been offered work and listening to the daily news on this topic is most depressing... so for all the drama which is my life, I probably should be thankful and zip it.

Currently I am in Florida on an independent venture... a nice break and staying here on the farm at Pennock Point for a week or so. I covered the KWPN Kuering at Pennock Point this past Thursday. Not a large kuering but a good representation. I will be adding a few photos to the Blog.

I made a stop in New York with fellow "Shawn MacMillen" employee Adele and we went shopping at one of the best photography stores in New York I have ever been in. It is amazing what is available in a store of this type. Two floors a full city block in size. I purchased a new 70-200 2.8 lens... slightly used, very good price and a replacement for a lens that "bit the dust" (and I mean that literally) earlier this summer. So with my much needed new glasses, a new lens, current bills in order and a bit of money put aside for winter, I am not feeling terrible at the moment. It is indeed good to know that looking at the bigger picture is generally more appealing than the day to day grimmer moments.

Kuerings are fun to photograph. They move quickly. Most are young horses that have not been braided and shown prior and the buyer percentage is greatly improved over the marathon big league shows, for much less effort a better turn around, definitely agreeable.

My dear cousin Gwenola is trying to talk me into coming to France to check out equestrian competiton in and near Paris and I am tempted but we shall see. I do not want to dig too deeply into the winter emergency funds just yet.

Next in line of important next steps is "acquiring an international press pass" , an accreditation that would enable me to not only shoot but enter important international competition as a promtional tool and to enable another venue. I think I need to try to keep climbing this ladder a bit further if I am to achieve some satisfaction in the form of a finale for my shooting career. So that is my big current goal. How do I achieve an international press pass? Where? and how soon can I acquire it if at all possible?

Andiamo... definitely a class act.... a former ride of California based trainer...John French.... now showing under a Junior Rider, from Tennessee...not without a few issues throughout the show but it all came together in the final week when his owner/rider rode him to a double class win in the large Juniors which secured her a Grand Championship and her second horse went Reserve Grand.... all is well that ends well.

Here we have Goosebumps...a real head turner who competed in the 3'3" division... a good representation of the quality of young horses competing on the circuit.

Just the cutest little puppy ever. This little chihuahua pup was fearless, and everyone went bananas when she came prancing around. Tiniest little thing, but oh so cute.

A candid of one of the Mexican ring crew drew a few comments. Even the boss complimented me on how many people noticed thsi shot.

Sometimes a moment in time can be very interesting in photos.

This young lady was apparantly a bit nervous of the photographer taking her picture. She was as cute as a button but I truly did not mean to upset her.

All in all a nice show. It was very hot and busy the final weekend but throughout we had good temperatures and the weather was quite cooperative.

We are at the Kentucky Horse Park shooting the Bluegrass Show. There are always a lot of things going on at the park and this week the Young Rider Championships were on, so although I had little time to go see the proceedings, I did get a brief visit with one of the Ontario team riders. I couldn't resist saying hello to a fellow Canadian in Kentucky.

I bought this cantaloupe. It was huge.. Think it is the biggest cantaloupe I have ever seen. It was delicious and priced at $2.50 but the funniest part is when I was buring it, a shopping wizard came along beside me and said... Hey the same thing cost %2.23 at Krugers and if you tell them at the checkout, they have to match prices so I ot it even cheaper.... it cost $2.23 at Wallmart in Georgetown, Kentucky. We had it for desert one night at a Mexican restaurant. It fed 12 people and I still had nearly half left over. Yummy. and definitely a rare find. Can you beat the price? Wow.

Ring crew... I noticed this guy was quite the gymnast. He coild flip forward onto his feet and then back into a handstand and land on his back and flip back and forth. Rather unique. I can barely get up most days... so I was impressed!!!!

Today I reached the grand ole age of 57 and was noticing I am 20 years the senior of every member of the crew. .. and also noticed I have something in common with Heinz.... ha ha.

Something tell me my days are naturally numbered so enjoy what there are of them while I can. Back is bothering me quite a bit these days but otherwise no health issues, and for how I have lived my life, that is probably nothing short of remarkable.

Feeding the Greed

A lot of thoughts have been going through my mind lately... thoughts of what is it that I want out of what is left of my career? and where it is that I find myself currently? I find little comfort in any of what currently exists. I also feel that there is a lot of misconception being delivered my way. I have become resigned to working partially under the table to help "feed the greed" of other companies trying to raise themselves up. It seems a pattern continues to emerge that I cannot shake and this is in many ways disturbing. At this point in life, do I need to be here? None of the answers I find are very comforting.

The details of this situation I think best to keep private. As it was delivered to me, "No, you cannot use one of our cameras for any use you might term as personal benefit." Words that have cut through me like a knife when I think of what I daily offer for little in exchange. I believe it is myself I need to blame for so much in my life that has placed me at this point in time with so little sense of self worth.

This has to end and it is I that must decide when and how to end it.

My question to myself is... Is it too late for another chapter? Sometimes I feel yes, but that sense of hopelessness is exactly what has gotten me to this point and it is that that I need to address.

This post will not be accompanied by photos... in a personal salute to the refusal I received. A refusal which I have apparantly come to terms with in their eyes, but a refusal that has marked me in a way I cannot begin to express.

It is time to start making my way home.

At a time when life seems somewhat bleak, it truly does seem trivial to be pointing out another victory in the Facebook Contest Circuit, but in the midst of many thorns, let there be a bloom.

My mare Madge at the little place in Ocala, and a gentle moment with my neighbour's neice who is for :the first time ever" going near a horse. The mare is so kind and sweet, and you can see it written all over her. She is in foal herself and you can see she is going to be a wonderful mom. A "touching" moment.

Omens? Should one heed the signs?

Sometimes weird things happen in life and they leave you in pieces. Today was such a day. I have had much disappointment lately in the business, so much so I wonder if it is time to ease out and let someone else have the fun. I have been strung along regarding sales of photos. I put out a huge effort work wise and the return is beyond minimal, to the point of downright pitiful. Bills are piling. Nothing seems to go right.

The online availability of images is possibly more damaging than productive. People are lifting them without permission. Sometimes it is hard to call them on it but it happens. Just disappointment, lack of respect in general. It is very discouraging.

Today another day in which I was to meet and get paid and at the same location, this proved to be the third "no show" in just over a week. Always the same, Oh they are coming. They will be right there.... and nothing.

Add to that I covered a horse pulling event and a lady who was standing next to me with a rather mediocre camera had been sputtering and checking me out somewhat. She apparantly does the web site, a complete amateur, I might add and also does photos which she posts there. As it is a nonprofit organization, everything is for free... so they say. I asked if she would post a link to my proof site on there. She said a flat "No, absolutely not. Why should I support you?" Well perhaps she has a point, but which of the dark ages does this woman hail from I wonder? Why not offer something a bit more to the members and let them make their own choices...?? Sound unreasonable???

The final straw today for me... I packed up the discs I had written for viewing "on spec" and brought them home. On the way home, I came around a turn and I see something flopping in the road. The car that I had just passed on the road had struck a cat and it was dying a horrible death in front of my eyes. It leaped and would land flat, and then it's back end would again pick it up and leap into the air. It made no sense. It had a broken neck or worse. I saw blood on its head and coming from its mouth. Horrible. It died in less than a minute but I sat there in shock and disbelief knowing this cat was doomed. I am not feeling so well at the moment, about many things but that was definitely the icing on the cake.

Maybe it truly is time....

Tentative Summer Plans... and a few comments!!!

Just an update on work schedule...I am accepting outside work. Local scene could certainly use a wake up call!!!

Winter is coming. and I do not see cash flow! I had hoped to do Gingerwood. I had hoped to do a KWPN keuring on PEI. It would have been nice to stay in the area. However and I am going to be very honest here. Presentation of shows from what I am seeing at this point in time is lacking. Conditons vary... breathing dust all day long with the hope of rain I don't find "customer friendly". Sorry!!!!!

Have a watering truck on hand. It is not that big a task to water a ring twice in one day. Healthier for the horses, the kids and for all who are standing around. Costly equipment gets damaged as well. I have proof of that.!! and NO... I was not pleased!!

Production is high and yes you can certainly pump them through, ..Wow!!!!...on that level I have been impressed, but a bit of courtesy to those who support you is not that painful. Remember where your money is coming from. Jumps are not kept painted or cleaned, and courses are not decorated. This is a business. I know those who run the shows are making money. Use a bit of heart in the bigger picture and it will not hurt you, I promise.

Everything is looking a bit impoverished which does little to attract, and it certainly kills the photo sales. I cannot make average look amazing. I can merely document what is. There are a lot of areas in need of improvement here and forgive me for making a point of it. Someone should!

I cannot make saleable photos if you do not do your part, and it is certainly evident I cannot live on "hope" alone. Cash flow keeps everyone alive!
